OK, I can’t find my notes, there’s no metadata with this film image, and I can’t find any details of this case online but here’s what I remember:
This young man was banned from attending his suburban Philadelphia high school in the late 1990s because officials said that his spiked hair was a threat to the safety of other students.
And so he took his case to federal court in Philadelphia, possibly defending his freedom of expression or right to education, but I’m really guessing now.
In the photo above, he consented to reporters’ requests to feel his hair during an impromptu sidewalk press conference.
In all my years, I can’t recall any other cases where journalists felt the need to touch their subjects.
